Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 cup mushrooms (optional)
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup
- 2 tablespoons butter (for roux)
- 2 tablespoons flour (for roux)
- 1 pinch paprika or dried thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onions, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.
- Press the mixture into an even layer in a baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together beef broth and cream of mushroom soup until smooth.
- For a thicker gravy, prepare a roux by melting butter in a pan, whisking in flour until smooth, then adding the broth and soup mixture.
- Pour gravy over the meat mixture.
- Bake uncovered for about 45 minutes, or until the center reaches 160°F (70°C) on a thermometer.
- Let the dish rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Customize with sautéed mushrooms or a sprinkle of shredded cheddar before baking. Can be assembled ahead and baked later.
