Description

A classic dessert that combines layers of sponge cake with rich custard and smooth chocolate ganache, perfect for celebrations.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole milk (for custard)
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup high-quality chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and mix until smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the cakes are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. For the custard, whisk together the 2 cups of milk, cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the mixture thickens, then stir in the vanilla extract and let it cool.
  7. For the ganache, heat the heavy cream in a saucepan until it simmers. Pour it over the chopped chocolate and stir until smooth.
  8. To assemble the cake, layer the cooled custard between the two cake layers and pour the warm ganache over the top.

Notes

Make sure all your ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Avoid overmixing the batter to prevent toughness.
