Description
A fun, slightly chocolatey twist on classic cut-out sugar cookies that hold their shape and are perfect for decorating.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup sour cream or yogurt
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add egg yolk, vanilla, and sour cream; mix until combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk dry ingredients together.
- Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined.
- Chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out on parchment paper to 1/4-inch thickness, and cut into shapes.
- Chill the cut shapes briefly on the sheet.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–11 minutes until edges are set.
- Cool on a rack before decorating.
Notes
For better aeration, use cold-but-soft butter. Chill cut cookies before baking to maintain their shape.
