Description

A warm, spiced mulled wine perfect for New Year’s Eve celebrations, easy to prepare and great for parties.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
  • 1/3 cup (65 g) granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) brandy (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the wine, sugar, orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and brandy in a medium non-reactive pot.
  2. Heat over medium-low until steam rises and small bubbles appear at the edges, aiming for a temperature of 160–170°F (70–75°C).
  3. Reduce to the lowest heat and simmer gently for 20–30 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  4. Taste the mulled wine, strain through a fine mesh sieve into a warmed pitcher, and add additional sugar or brandy if desired.

Notes

Serve with an orange wheel and a cinnamon stick for garnish. For a non-alcoholic alternative, use unsweetened apple cider.
