Description

Delightful breadsticks infused with citrus flavor and topped with a sweet glaze, perfect for snacks or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Warm Water (95-110°F)
  • 2 teaspoons Sugar (or Honey/agave syrup)
  • 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast (or Instant yeast)
  • 3-3½ cups All-Purpose Flour (Whole wheat flour can also be used)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (preferably sea salt)
  • 1 tablespoon Avocado Oil (or melted butter)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter, Melted (or coconut oil for dairy-free)
  • 3 tablespoons Orange Zest (or Lemon zest)
  • ½ cup Sugar for Filling (Brown sugar for deeper flavor)
  • ¼ cup Room Temperature Butter (softened)
  • ½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • 3 cups Powdered Sugar (or granulated sugar blended to powder)
  • 2 tablespoons Orange Juice (or milk)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add 3 cups of flour, salt, avocado oil, melted butter, and orange zest to the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Add more flour if sticky to create a workable dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. In a small bowl, mix softened butter, filling sugar, and vanilla extract until combined.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down, roll it into a rectangle, and spread the filling over the dough.
  6. Cut the dough into strips and twist each strip to form breadsticks. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Cover and let the twisted breadsticks rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  9. While baking, whisk together powdered sugar and orange juice until smooth for the glaze.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over warm breadsticks after baking.

Notes

Serve warm and enjoy with tea or coffee. Experiment with different citrus zests for varied flavors.
