Description

A rich and savory breakfast casserole featuring custardy eggs, sausage, and buttery bread, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450 g) breakfast sausage
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups (475 ml) whole milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 6 cups cubed day-old French bread
  • 8 ounces (225 g) shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Brown the breakfast sausage in a skillet and drain excess fat.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, salt, black pepper, and Dijon mustard.
  3. In a separate bowl, toss together the cubed French bread, cheddar cheese, and cooled sausage.
  4. Press the mixture into a greased 9×13-inch pan.
  5. If desired, refrigerate overnight to allow the bread to soak in the custard.
  6. Bake uncovered at 350°F (175°C) for 45-55 minutes until set and golden.
  7. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing to serve.

Notes

For the best results, use day-old or lightly toasted bread. Allow casserole to rest after baking to ensure it sets properly.
