Description
Delicious homemade soft pretzels with a golden-brown crust and chewy interior, perfect for snacking or parties.
Ingredients
- 3 1/2 cups (420 g) bread flour
- 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (105–110°F / 40–43°C)
- 2 1/4 tsp (7 g) instant yeast
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1/2 cup (120 g) baking soda
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp water
- Coarse salt for sprinkling
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes by hand or 5-6 minutes in a stand mixer.
- Let the dough rise in a warm spot until doubled, about 60 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and roll each piece into a 20-inch rope, shaping them into pretzels.
- Boil a large pot of water and add baking soda. Boil each pretzel for 20-30 seconds, then transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Mix the egg and water to make an egg wash and brush it over each pretzel. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (220°C) for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush with melted butter right after baking for added flavor.
Notes
Store cooled pretzels in an airtight container for up to 48 hours. For longer storage, freeze individually wrapped pretzels.
