A delightful dessert combining smooth custard with fruity berries, perfect for special occasions.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Whole Milk (substitute with plant-based milk)
- 6 large Egg Yolks
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract (or vanilla bean paste)
- 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar (or brown sugar)
- 1/4 cup Cornstarch (or arrowroot starch)
- 4 tablespoons Butter (or margarine)
- 1 cup Heavy Cream (or half-and-half)
- 2 cups Frozen Berries (or seasonal fruit)
- 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar (adjust for berry tartness)
- 2 tablespoons Cornstarch (or arrowroot starch)
- 1/2 cup Water
- 1 cup Powder Sugar (for dusting)
- 1 sheet Puff Pastry (or homemade pastry)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
- Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until warm. In a bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch.
- Gradually mix warm milk into the egg mixture, stirring constantly. Return to saucepan and cook over low heat until thickened. Stir in butter and vanilla until smooth.
- Pour custard into the baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30-35 minutes until set. Let cool.
- For the berry filling, combine frozen berries, sugar, cornstarch, and water in a saucepan, cook over medium heat until thickened. Let cool.
- Layer berry filling over the cooled custard. Optionally, place a sheet of puff pastry on top.
- Whip heavy cream until soft peaks form and spread over the berry layer.
- Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
Be gentle when whisking the custard to keep it smooth, and allow it to cool completely before adding berry filling.
