Delightful vanilla custard squares with a buttery biscuit-like base, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Fresh fruit for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix together the flour, butter, and sugar until crumbly to form the crust.
- Press the mixture into the bottom of a greased baking dish and bake for 15 minutes until lightly golden.
- While the crust is baking, in a saucepan, simmer the milk, sugar, and egg yolks over low heat, whisking constantly until thickened.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the custard over the cooled crust and refrigerate until set, about 2 hours.
- Slice into squares once set, and serve chilled, dusted with powdered sugar and garnished with fresh fruit if desired.
Notes
For the cleanest cuts, dip your knife in hot water and wipe it dry.
